Illuminating the Way: Essential Lighting Measurements for Your Installation Project.

Choosing a light fixture for a design project can be stressful, especially when you find yourself asking questions like 'How high should the light fixture be?' or 'Are these kitchen pendants the right height?' Selecting the fixture is only half the battle; proper installation is integral to achieving the look and feel you desire. Here at Two.Eighty.Seven. Home, we've got you covered. We have compiled some of the most popular lighting measurements to help make lighting shopping just a little bit easier!

Lighting in the kitchen is essential for functionality and aesthetics. The installation process can be a bit tricky, and the measurements can vary depending on the type and size of your kitchen island and the light fixtures you choose.

Linear Suspension Over Kitchen Island

When choosing a chandelier or pendant for your kitchen island, you want about 6” of breathing room on either side of your linear fixture. You can also follow a ⅔ rule, selecting a linear suspension that’s about ⅔ the size of your kitchen island. This gives a balanced and appealing look to the entire fixture and enhances the visual appeal of your kitchen.

Spacing and Size of Pendants

The size of your pendants will depend on the amount of pendants you want and the size of your iland. A general rule of thumb is to divide your island into equal segments, one higher than the amount of pendants you want to hang. What does this mean; well if, you want 2 pendants, divide your island into 3 even segments and pendants should hang where each segment meets. Therefore if you have a 6' island and want 2 pendants, you would break the kitchen island into 3 2-foot segments and hang the pendants at 2 feet and 4 feet from one side. We also recommend 30" between the pendants depending on the diameter of the pendants you have selected. Now all that is left is to do is choose the size. The way to do this is, take your island measurement and number of pendants you’d like, and from there reverse calculate the ideal diameter given the spacing suggestion above.

Dining Room Lighting

Lighting in the dining room sets the mood for meals and gatherings. The correct lighting fixture size and placement can add a dramatic effect to the dining room.

Weather you're swinging from pendant or a chic chandelier there is a rule of thumb to follow when installing...

When selecting a pendant or chandelier for your dining room table, you want to leave 6" of breathing room on either side of the pendant. A fixture with a diameter that’s approximately ½ - ¾ the diameter of your dining table is a good rule of thumb, depending on the look you’re going for. My 4 fav lighting fixtures this month!

1. MERCURY GREEN MARBLE PENDANT LIGHT

One of my Fav designers has teamed up with CB2 to design a beautiful collection. Farrah Sit's stacked pendant light is a juxtaposition of primary forms. Opaline glass shade floats between solid green marble with restrained unlacquered brass detailing. Perfect over the dining table or kitchen island, shade is open at the bottom to cast ambient light which really sets the mood for cozy warm dining experience!

Bathroom Lighting

Proper lighting in the bathroom is crucial for practicality and design. The measurements for bathroom lighting fixtures can greatly enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your bathroom.

Sconces on Either Side of the Mirror

Vanity lights come in all shapes and sizes, and just like your bathroom mirror, you want them at about eye level to evenly illuminate your face. When hanging vanity lights on the side of your mirror, 60” - 70” from the ground is a safe bet.

Sconces Above the Mirror

A vanity light above the mirror should be about ¾ to the full width of the mirror. You don’t want your vanity light to run past the edges of the mirror, and too small will not provide enough light. If your mirror is extra wide, consider 2 or 3 vanity lights or a linear pendant above the mirror.
